Course Requirements

This is a virtual work experience module. Virtual work experience refers to structured programs or opportunities that simulate real-world work environments and tasks, but are conducted entirely online or remotely. These experiences are designed to provide participants with insights into various industries, professions, or roles, allowing them to gain practical skills, industry knowledge, and professional networks without the need for physical presence in a traditional workplace setting.

Course Description

Students are assisting an ecosystem reconstruction advisor (Ecologist and Environmental Scientist) who is working in closure management for a mine. The team's objective is to restore the site to a state as close to its natural condition as feasible.

Students need to determine which planting techniques will improve the survival of the plant species in the waste rock left at the site. This challenge exists as plants don't normally grow from rock, they grow from soil and other nutrients. Students will need to assess the effectiveness of four different types of planting treatments: Older Biopots, Younger Biopots, Older Plastic and Younger Plastic. Students must interrogate field data to calculate the mean survival rate for plants grown across different treatments. Students must make recommendations to Rio Tinto for how to best rejuvenate the site.
